# The Depth of Terms

## The Depth of Terms

The rain beat a steady rhythm against the armored glass of the sea-station, overlooking the fractured waters of the Azure Passage—the world’s most vital maritime trade route, now choked with the rusting husks of warships. For nineteen years, the **Kalaan Arch-Republic** and the **Vestra Dominion** had bled each other dry across these volcanic chains.

Across the obsidian table sat High Commissioner Vance of Vestra, leaning back with a smug, weary grin. Opposite him was Envoy Malek of Kalaan, stoic and posture-perfect. Despite two decades of brutal attrition, formal diplomatic protocol had never broken down between the two island powers.

Malek slid a thin glass datapad across the table.

"We are here to receive Vestra’s terms of surrender," Malek said smoothly.

Vance blinked, then let out a dry, raspy laugh. "I think your translation software is malfunctioning, Malek. You mean you’re here to accept *our* terms for *your* capitulation. Look at the maps. Your southern perimeter is collapsing. Your supply lines are dust."

Malek didn't blink. "No, Vance. I meant what I said. It is far better that you surrender now... while you still have cities to govern."

Vance’s laughter faded, replaced by an irritated scowl. "What kind of pathetic theatre is this? You’re in no position to make threats—"

Malek glanced down at his wrist, waited three seconds, and softly **snapped his fingers**.

A heartbeat later, a sound like tearing iron roared up from the deep. The entire station lurched violently, sloshing water out of the crystal glasses on the table. Emergency klaxons shrieked to life, bathing the room in pulsing crimson light.

Vance grabbed the edge of the table to keep his balance, his face draining of color. "What did you do?!"

On the room's central holomap, a red alert flashed over the eastern sector of the Vestra Dominion—specifically, Mount Sentry, a massive, heavily fortified island housing Vestra's third-largest naval base and over a million citizens.

The holographic landmass began to twitch. Then, before Vance’s widening eyes, the terrain profile flattened.

"Eighteen years is a long time to fight a war on the surface," Malek said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth. "While your fleets were busy pounding our beaches, our deep-sea mining drones were working quietly beneath your volcanic foundations. Five miles down, straight into the subterranean magma chambers."

Vance stared at the live satellite feed flickering onto the wall display. A colossal plume of superheated steam and ash was boiling off the ocean surface where Mount Sentry had stood seconds ago. The sea was devouring the island whole, its structural flank completely collapsing after the localized detonation of three sub-crustal nuclear charges.

"You... you dropped an entire island into the ocean..." Vance whispered, his voice trembling violently as he pointed a shaking finger at the screen. "A million souls..."

"We have planted thirty-four more charges along the rest of your archipelago," Malek said quietly, standing up and buttoning his coat. "So, Commissioner. Shall we discuss your terms?"

Vance could only stare at the empty black circle on the radar screen where an island used to be, his mouth agape, as the room continued to vibrate with the distant, sickening rumble of the sea consuming the land.
